Find out if you can wear lenses

Who can Wear Contact Lenses?

Almost anyone can wear contact lenses, whatever their age or lifestyle. Find out below if there is a contact lens to correct your vision.

Short-sightedness

If you’re short-sighted (myopic), you will have trouble seeing objects at a distance.

Contact lenses for short-sightedness (myopia) are thinner at the centre than at the edges. This helps to direct light away from the centre of the lens of your eye and focus it on your retina.

If you prefer to use daily disposable contact lenses ask your Eye Care Practitioner/Optometrist about 1•DAY ACUVUE® TRUEYE® or 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST®. For reusable lenses, ask about ACUVUE® OASYS®.

Long-sightedness

It may be that you have been long-sighted (hyperopic) most of your life or your eyesight has deteriorated with age (presbyopia). If you are long-sighted you can see objects clearly at a distance, but find it difficult to focus on things up close.

Contact lenses for long-sightedness (hyperopia) are thicker at the centre and thinner at the edges. They bend the light toward the centre and focus it on your retina.

If you prefer to use daily disposable contact lenses, ask your Eye Care Practitioner/Optometrist about 1•DAY ACUVUE® TRUEYE® or 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST®. For reusable lenses, ask about ACUVUE® OASYS®.

Astigmatism

If you have astigmatism your vision may be blurry or distorted at all distances. The extent of this will vary based on individual differences in the shape of your eye. Thanks to recent developments in technology, most people with astigmatism can now enjoy vision correction with soft toric contact lenses¹.

ACUVUE® lenses for astigmatism have Accelerated Stabilisation Design technology. It uses the power of your natural blink to help keep your lens in the right position, giving you clear, stable vision.

If you have astigmatism and would like to wear daily disposable lenses, ask your Eye Care Practitioner/Optometrist about 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® for ASTIGMATISM. For reusable contact lenses, ask about ACUVUE® OASYS® for ASTIGMATISM.

Your Eye Care Practitioner/Optometrist is best placed to help you decide which type of contact lens is right for your vision needs. You can also find further advice about choosing the right type of contact lenses here.

Free yourself from glasses!

Whether you’ve been wearing glasses for years or you have just discovered your vision needs correcting, contact lenses are a great choice for crisp, clear vision.

It’s perfectly fine to wear your contact lenses all day long, as long as your Eye Care Practitioner/Optometrist agrees. Or you may prefer to alternate between lenses and glasses. The great thing about contact lenses is they fit around you, whatever your lifestyle.

Why wear contact lenses instead of glasses?

Contact lenses give you the freedom to look and live the way you want without glasses getting in the way.

Here are some of the reasons why contact lenses are a better choice than glasses:

  • They aren’t so heavy and cumbersome.
  • Unlike glasses they don’t bounce around, slip down your nose or fall off when you’re active.
  • You don’t have to worry about breaking them.
  • Lenses move with your eye to give you a full field of vision, so you can spot things out of the corner of your eye.
  • They won’t pick up reflections, get splashed or steam up – whatever the weather.
  • A face without glasses gives you a more natural look.
  • They are harder to lose.
  • If you do lose or break them, they are more cheaply and easily replaced.
  • You can create different looks for every occasion and show off your eye make-up.
  • You can wear the latest style of fashionable, non-prescription sunglasses.
  • You can wear them for an active lifestyle, such as to enjoy crisp vision on the ski slopes. And they won’t interfere with your headgear.
  • You won’t have to remember to take your glasses everywhere with you, just in case you need to read something, such as a menu or notice.
  • They don’t rub against your ears or pinch your nose.

There are many more reasons why contact lenses are a great alternative to glasses.

Why contact lenses are great for sport

Contact lenses give you a crisp, full field of vision and a freedom of movement, without glasses getting in the way.

Contacts lenses versus glasses

Here are some of the reasons why contact lenses have a sporting advantage:

  • Lenses give you clear all-round vision, so you can track a ball without the frames of your glasses restricting your view.
  • They don’t slip down your nose when you sweat.
  • They don’t pick up reflections that distort your view.
  • You can wear contact lenses for gymnastics, martial arts or any other sport that may involve a tumble.
  • They can be worn with masks, helmets or any other type of sporting headgear.
  • They don’t bounce up and down when you are out jogging or taking an aerobics class.
  • They won’t break if something or someone accidentally hits you in the face.
  • Unlike glasses, you don’t regularly take them on and off, so you won’t have to worry about losing them.
  • You can wear them under your goggles on the ski slopes.
  • They don't mist up or get splashed by the rain on runs or climbs, so you can clearly see the next sturdiest spot for your footing.
