Tips for Contact Lens Wear

Here are valuable tips for wearing contact lenses for computer users and those who wear makeup. Learn how to prolong your ability to focus and avoid teary, itchy, and dry eyes during computer use and how you can properly apply and remove makeup without irritating your eyes and lenses.

Wearing contacts for computer users

Many people find it difficult to focus properly after long stretches in front of the computer. Others may experience tearing and itchy or dry eyes. Some tips that may help minimise these problems are:

20/20/20 rule: Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes for 20 seconds by staring intently at an object at least 20 feet away.
It has been suggested that staring at a monitor may reduce the number of times you blink. This can cause the surface of your lenses to become dry, making your eyes feel uncomfortable and your vision less clear. Some remedies which may alleviate dryness are rewetting drops* or applying warm eye pads to encourage your eyes to generate more tears.

Make sure you're not seated too close to your screen. If your fingers can easily touch the monitor when you are seated, you are probably too close.
Avoid having a light source directly in front or behind you. If your computer is near a window, use a screen filter to reduce any harmful glare.
If you need to refer to documents, hold them up at the same distance between the eye and screen. This will help reduce eye fatigue as you won't have to focus on two different distances for an extended period of time.

Wearing contacts while wearing makeup

It is possible for your pointy brushes, powdery cosmetics and gooey lotions to live harmoniously with your contacts. Just follow these simple tips:

Blink your eyes frequently while under a hair drier or blower to keep your eyes from getting too dry.
Use hairspray before putting on your contacts. If you use hairspray while you are wearing your contacts, close your eyes during spraying and for a few seconds afterwards.
Put in your lenses before you put on your makeup.

Use oil-free and fragrance-free eye makeup. Cream makeup may leave a film on your lenses.
Apply eyeliner above the lashes instead of your inner eye lid.
Apply mascara from the midpoint and extend to the tips. Don't start at the base of your lashes.
Use water-resistant mascara and eyeliner to prevent flaking and smudging.
Remove your lenses before you remove your eye make-up.
Remove your eye makeup every day with a hypoallergenic, oil-free remover.
